The Clade is a 320 paged novel whose author is James Bradley and was published by Titan publishers in 2017. The book was first published in 2015 and later in 2017, the second impression was published. Bradley is a critic and a novelist whose career began way back in 1994 when he released paper nautilus.
which is his only volume of verse. His other works include the wrack, the Deep field, ’the resurrectionist,’ Clade, the penguin book of the ocean, and
traced, the psychic landscape of this most haunted of cities. James is among the best Novelist, and he is currently living in Sydney, Australia. The Clade is a novel that takes its audience into the near future and uses the deteriorating environmental situation as its setting.
In the Clade, James Bradley argues that as a result of continued deterioration of the world climate, the human race is in danger of being wiped from the earth’s face. A frequent occurrence of natural disasters like earthquakes and storms, animal death as well as uncontrollable weather is a clear indication that the planet is suffering from the consequences of collapsing climate. The impact of climate change goes beyond just destroying the habitats. The families struggle to remain connected, but the confusion brought about by climate change continue to keep them apart. The Clade portrays a picture of what will occur to the human race when the earth is unable to continue sustaining them and the tricks they will devise to adapt to the change.
The story begins with Adam Leith a climate change scientist collecting sediments on a beach in Antarctica region to research the impact of global warming. The study of these samples will help find an answer to what is going to happen next in the global weather. The climatic conditions have become very unpredictable, and the human race represented in the novel by the Clade of Adam is nearing extinction. The impacts of climate change soon will be extreme, sea creatures are dying due to acidification of the water bodies, the melting of glaciers and snow at the mountain tops is leading to rising sea levels, and some other parts are experiencing intense heat. The evidence Adam is regularly getting from his analysis implies climatic change is way much beyond his control.
Adam at first has mixed feelings of anxiety and worry as he waits for the news from his partner Ellie who is expecting her IVF treatment results. Adam’s worry is regarding bringing a child into the world that is already coming to an end as depicted by the Antarctic ice shelf. The evolution of the relationship between Adam and Ellie and his undying efforts to finally reconnect with other members of the family brings out the concept of love and family. Love and family is the basis of Clade and a propelling force behind the story. When Summer is finally born, her parents give her the best care, a scenario that brings out the author’s theme of family. Despite all the troubles Adam and Ellie have to go through they still give summer maximum parental love.
The author informs us about the impacts climate change will have on the well-being of the ecosystem. The Clade of the story involves the descendants of Adam Leith, and every chapter deals with the next generation of Adam’s lineage. This episodic structure enables the author to predict the future where he believes that the environment will be extremely corrupted with human activities and at the same time the characters of the future generation of Adam exhibit inherited characteristics of poor communication skills and awkwardness. The clade is a clever apocalypse where the author communicates to his audience most thoughtfully and reflectively (Housham, 2017). Bradley merges science and the near future to develop a successful setting for the drama in the family which helps the reader to continue focusing on how characters are interacting with each other.
The Novel takes an episodic structure where each chapter moves forward into the future. I like the way James Bradley chose to arrange his work because he successfully describes how the world is rapidly changing. The story chronicles the life of Adam and his partner Ellie and further follows their lineage as they struggle to fit in the collapsing universe. The society is finally crumbling as a result of despoiling human activities in the past that has come back to haunt their descendants. The adverse weather conditions like droughts are resulting in pandemics, crop failure as well as starvation and as a result, humanity is in danger, husbands are losing wives, fathers are losing daughters, and millions are dying (Pierce, 2015). Adam loses contact with his family when he finally separates from Ellie, and he does not know the whereabouts of Summer until after tracking her. Adam finds his daughter already with a child Noah and living in England, a city experiencing sporadic storms at the moment.
When the apocalyptic storm hits England, Adam battles to remain alive rescues his Grandson Noah and brings him back to Australia, but summer disappears again. Ellie who had lost contact with her family finally meets “Noah, a child who has his lens on and is absorbed in exploring one of the virtual worlds he spends hours in every day” (Bradley, 2017 p 206). Similarly, Ellie finds a new passion in beekeeping due to the interaction with Doctor Amir, a beekeeper who is preoccupied in Accelerated Colony Collapse Disorder (ACCD). Adam believes just like in ACCD at one point human race will be stimulated to collapse resulting in a crash.
The story shows how innocent people sometimes find themselves in an incidence they do not know how it came into existence, but still, they have to face it and struggle to survive, regardless of how terrible it may appear. Summer and Noah are victims of what their ancestors created; global warming is here because of human activities that happened in the past. Even though the characters have suffered too much loss, they must remain human as they continue trying to understand what happened to them (Baum, 2015). To do so, they need to be hopeful as they try to change the current situation that is on the verge of wiping out humanity.
The Clade is one of Bradley’s most successful pieces of work, and he has been able to make the apocalypse pleasant. I would encourage people not to be scared of what the future might look like as depicted by the Clade but instead do everything possible to avoid it. The human race is in danger of being wiped by the collapsing climate, but there is hope of humanity surviving if they will struggle to adapt to the changes. The Clade helps the audience understand the danger of climate collapsing and fight for change. The novel gives hope that even though there is a possibility that earth might reach a point where it is unable to sustain humanity, it could survive, although they might need to struggle to do so. The story begins with hope and the likelihood of a new generation coming up. Ellie is pregnant, and the couple is eagerly waiting for Summer to be born, who will, in turn, give birth to Noah, Adam’s grandson.
