Choosing the best landscape design for any project is essential, considering the impact that these landscapes can have on the lives of people in the surrounding environment. When designing landscapes for use by children, the selection of an appropriate strategy becomes complicated but is nonetheless important. Currently, there are concerns regarding just how much children get to discover the natural world. This report acknowledges the need for children to be allowed to come into contact with the outside world as a means of providing them with freedom rather than subjecting them to feelings of being segregated or left out from nature. In fact, most parents are concerned about the safety and health of their children when placed in the natural world. While this leads to an increase in the emphasis placed on carefulness in outdoor play, it is nonetheless vital to consider that research has found that children aged between four and thirteen years old have a special attachment to the environment and its natural elements.

Creating a better playground for this project is a vital factor for the children since it provides them with opportunities to improve their physical strength as well enhance their memory. As a result, one aspect of the project will thereby be the addition of space so that the children who play in this new environment can run around freely as they wish. Children aged between four and thirteen years old tend to be active and the only way that they can prove their skills is by creatively participating in games with other children. This means that the best landscape design, in this case, ought to be attentive to the needs of the children within this age bracket. Grass and tree are best suited to allow for variations in the children’s behavior since they can remember the scenery according to how it is set and arranged. To activate a learning group, the playground should thereby be best suited to provide the best learning prospects.

In the recent years, more people have had a discourse on the benefits of outdoor activities for children, noting that these activities are a need and a fundamental right for young children. The arguments that support the need for children to play in outdoor environments have gained traction since they have raised more questions regarding children’s play presentation and in what manner they actually interact with these environments. Findings reveal that a lack of space infringes on the capacity for children to play freely, thereby affecting their play experiences negatively. The subsequent lack of attention to their learning needs also influences the behavior of the children in a negative manner. It has increasingly become uncommon to see young children playing safely outdoors without active monitoring on their parents’ part. Such constraints also have profound repercussions on the psychophysical development of the children aged between three and fourteen. Therefore, children need an environment that can in many ways address their developmental needs and challenge them to observe and learn new things.

Introduction

The availability of open spaces for recreational purposes is an extension of our connection to nature and is essential to living a well-rounded life. For children, there is an added need for them to have access to an environment that can allow them to play and interact freely for the purposes of their entertainment and development. For this project, the elementary school landscape needs a redesign that fully utilizes the outdoor space to maximize its benefits for the children. This also includes considerations for making it a safe and age-appropriate environment that also factors in the variations in children’s ages in the school. Therefore, the redesign of the elementary school’s outdoor space will help to ensure that the children’s developmental and entertainment needs are met by providing them with a safe, environmentally friendly environment that enriches their learning experiences.

Advantages of a Better Landscape Layout

In modern society, there is a belief that nature and outdoor settings play an important role in ensuring children’s wellbeing (Aziz & Said, 2012). However, there are concerns since children today have become fonder of playing video games rather than spending time outdoors. More importantly, it is possible to both determine the existence of and follow the trend of reduced outdoor time for children, making it harder to ignore this issue. Our firm’s main obligation is to offer the most suitable landscape design to fit the needs of children aged between four and thirteen. The developmental gains that natural environments provide are evident in the fact that natural environments such as parks and fields are appropriate settings within which children can learn. Additionally, the opportunities that children get to engage in play and exercise their imaginative abilities in such environments also improve their attractiveness as landscaping options. Therefore, this memo intends to tackle that particular concern as well as any other elements that may need further attention prior to project implementation.

More Playground Space

Our firm can begin by building gaming tools around the park to ensure that the children engage in various learning activities as they play. One of the benefits of adding such game tools is that children within the targeted age bracket like to learn through engaging in activities that can strengthen their mental abilities (Dowdell, et al., 2011). Moreover, there is also a concern for the exercise that children get from the current playground environment considering that over 25% of all children exercise only two to three times a week as shown in Figure 1. Therefore, the availability of more space for playtime activities will help meet the developmental needs that children in this age group have, while also allowing them to engage in productive behavior that improves their articulation in their future lives.

Creating a Safer Playground

Attracting and maintaining the attention of a child is a fruitful exercise since it develops the child’s cognitive and motor skills. However, there is also a need for the environment to interact with the child to offer a better developmental experience (Clements, 2004). Some of these changes can include alterations of the landscape setting itself to make it safer and more comfortable for the children. For instance, making the playground smoother and flatter can be a strong motivator for children to engage in sports such as cycling, skating, and running (Louv, 2008). In fact, considering the popularity of the sport, the addition of some smooth slopes can ensure that they can skate, while the use of shrubs such as those displayed in Figure 2 can also help to encourage group-oriented games such as hide and seek. Using this approach, the firm can ensure that the playground stimulates the children’s imaginations and helps to guide their behavior and development in a positive direction.

Conclusion

The proposed project involves our firm developing a playground for elementary-age children, necessitating an in-depth understanding of their developmental needs at this stage of their lives. By improving the landscape, the firm can ensure that the children can engage in activities that enhance their bodily and cognitive strength. Moreover, the provision of spaces that appeal to different sports and games will also ensure that the developmental progress of the children remains flexible enough to make the playground experience beneficial to them all. Given that these needs will remain even as more children undergo their education at the school, the selected landscape layout thereby presents the best opportunity for holistic development for the children who study and play there.
