Important compositional devices in the theme song

Important compositional devices in the theme song such as the tempo, rhythm, and instrumentation are meritoriously applied to increase the cinematic effect of the movie.

Tempo

The song of Celine Dion’ is played at a slow tempo in the film to enhance the love theme. Listening to the song in the movie, it starts off with gentle and soothing tempo, and one can feel the mood the composer is trying to convey, that is in a relaxed atmosphere. Later in the film, the Titanic collides with the iceberg and the scenario is no longer calm (Galdston et al. 53). At the same time, the tempo in Celine’s voice raises to reflect the mayhem of the moment. The tempo variances are deployed to reciprocate the various types of emotions in the film.

Rhythm

The theme song’s rhythm is deliberately slow such that the audience can relate to the central theme. Celine Dion’s soft vocalization is integrated with humming tunes to reflect the romantic nature of the movie. Again, there is an incorporation of the rhythm inflict different emotions at different times (Galdston et al. 57). For example, at the end of the film, the melody is angular and intricate for the sadness that suddenly befalls previously happy voyagers.

Instrumentation

“My Heart Will Go On” has both medium and high pitched notes played on the various instruments – the flute, harp, low strumming guitar, and piano. These instruments in the love song bring out the intimate feeling in the film between the two main characters (Galdston et al. 63). In most scenarios, the instrumentation aspect backing the vocals perfects the theme of love.

The application of music in ”Titanic” enables the delivery of the emotional content in the film. The choice, compositional effects, and use of Celine Dion’s ”My Heart Will Go On” also allow the audience to connect to the film through its different thematic aspects.
