Marilyn Manson was born Brian Hugh Warner in January 1969 in Canton, Ohio. He was the only child to Hugh Angus Warne and mother Barbara Warner Wyer who were of English, German, and Irish descent. As a child, Brian was molested by a neighbor causing him to develop a rebellious nature. His career started at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he took a degree in journalism while also working at 25th Parallel, a music magazine as a writer. Brian became a music journalist, songwriter, musician, actor, composer, and painter during his college years (Edmondson 66). The stage name, Marilyn Manson is also his band together with Daisy Berkowitz. The name Marilyn and Manson are part of two historical personalities, Marilyn Monroe who was a celebrity and a showbiz icon s, and the other Charles Monson, a cult leader, and brutal thug. The name combination is symbolic of the positive and negative, good and evil male and the female dichotomy of Brian’s life ambitions.
Contrary to his glamorous career, Marilyn has been on and off with relationships over the years and is currently unattached. Brian Hugh trademarked the name Marilyn Manson to protect his brand. In an incident, Manson’s name and career were seriously harmed by wrongful accusation after the Columbine high school massacre in 1999. A journalist had erroneously reported that the shooters wore Marilyn Manson makeup and t-shirts. This instance and several other federal cases that the singer and the band faced were factors that caused to the problems and instability of the group. Notwithstanding his issues with the law, Marilyn a charitable throughout his career with a particular focus on the poor and less privileged.
Marilyn Manson started his music career in a band with Scott Mitchell Putesky also known as Daisy Berkowitz in Florida in 1989. They later teamed up with Jeordie White, Madonna Wayne, and Jessica in Satan on fire and drums in Mrs. Scabtree. According to Edmondson, the group created music by mashing different genres that included industrial metal and rock, alternative metal, glam, hard and shock rock (292). Marilyn Monroe’s performance success started with the Portrait of an American Family album, produced by Trent Reznor in 1994. By 1995, the band had grown popular, and their cult had also increased considerably. In the same year, Manson and his band were recognized by MTV for their first hit song Sweet Dreams.
The band’s controversial life, songs, and the anti-religion theme in the song both appealed to multitudes of rebellious youngsters; the band’s fame was further increased with the release of the Antichrist Superstar album. It was until 1998 that the group reached number one spot in the US with their successive album, Mechanical Animal. The following year, the band won the best Cinematography at the MTV Video Award for The Dope Show, and in 2000 Marilyn was awarded recognized as the best male performer of that year. This streak of success culminated in topping the billboard top 200 charts in 2009 with the hit song I Want to Kill You Like They Do in Movies, followed by a 10th rank in 2012 for the Born Villain album (The Famous People n. pag.). Besides his stellar music career, Manson has also featured in films such as Lost Highway (1997), Beat the Devil (2002), Rise (2007), and Wrong Cops (2013).
