As the world evolves, businesses must keep up with current technological advances in order to maximize profits. One such technological development is the transition of several enterprises from wired networks to wireless networks (De Filippi, &Tréguer, 2015). I want to conduct research on the suitability of a wireless network in our organization because of the benefits of switching to a wireless connection and the present challenges we are encountering in our organization of increased demand for flexibility in doing business. Earlier this month I held a discussion with the managing director Vickidiane Muzika informing him of my intention to carry out a study on a wireless network to determine whether it is suitable for our organization. Therefore, with the approval of my seniors, I intend to invest my time and resources to work on the project.

Background: Going Wireless

The nature of the wired network is limiting in many ways to our organization. For instance, the wired network does not allow people to move freely with their laptops and still have a network connection. This limits the places where a person can perform their duty from and does not allow people to go into the field with their laptops and continue working. In addition, the wired network does not permit people to share resources and files to devices connected to the same network without being cabled to port. Further, the current network connection is less convenient to customers as compared to a wireless network. Consequently, the connection is leading to loss of clients since most prefer wireless connection (Baldemair, Dahlman, Fodor, Mildh, Parkvall, Selén, & Balachandran, 2013).

Another apparent problem with the connection in our organization is the inability of the network to handle a large number of users since the number of ports used to connect is less than the number of employees. This leads to wastage of time since sometimes employees have to wait for their colleagues to finish their work so that they can have access to the connection ports. Additionally, the network does not allow for an instant transfer of information, which again wastes time. Therefore, going wireless would be a good solution to these problems (Baldemair et al., 2013).

Benefits of Wireless Connection

The wireless connection is more flexible since it allows people to move around freely with their laptops within the range of the network as compared to the wired network. Further, the network allows individuals to share files with devices connected to the same network conveniently even in the absence port cables. The wireless network saves on resources since organizations do not have to lay cables and pass them through walls, which is tedious. Further, the wireless network makes it possible to add more laptops to the network without adding new cables. Besides, the network can handle a relatively large number of employees as compared to the wired network because it is not limited in terms of the number of ports required (Ghaleb-Seddik, Ghamri-Doudane, &Senouci, 2012).

The wireless connection can help an organization get access to a wide range of customers. When customers are given access to the wireless network; they gain confidence in the business and in return, they become loyal to the business. In addition, a wireless network is less complicated as compared to wired network and less disruptive. Further, the wireless connection is not affected by hitches in cables or breakages on the wires. It also keeps an office tidy and makes appear less congested since there no cables crossing the room (Ghaleb-Seddik et al., 2012).

Having a Wired and Wireless Setup

A combination of both wired and wireless network may be advantageous due to various reasons. Firstly, in case there is the breakdown in one of the networks, the other acts as a backup. Therefore, there will be no disruptions, as the business will continue as usual. Secondly, integrating the two will save time and money. This is because, with both wired and wireless network, the business does not have to replace the desktops with laptops, but instead it only adds few laptops to the business. Thirdly, the two networks complement each other in the sense that most of the sensitive information can be kept in the wired network, as it is more secure and difficult to hack while the day-to-day activities can be done through the wireless network, which is fast and efficient. Lastly, having the two networks will meet the need of each employee and management since some would be in favor of wired connection while some would be in favor of wireless connection (De Filippi&Tréguer, 2015).

How I Will Conduct the Research

I will begin my research by giving questionnaires to employees of our company to get their views on a wireless network. I will also visit various organizations where they are already using wireless connections and compare their efficiency and benefits with those of our organization. To do this, I will prepare questionnaires, conduct surveys in those organizations, and go through some of their financial statements. Besides, I will hold interviews with managers to gain in-depth knowledge on the wireless network. Further, I will interview some experts on their opinions and views about wireless and wired networks. I will then analyze the data using various methods. Finally, I will make conclusions and examine the implications of this project on the organization.

Amount of Time and Expected Outcomes

To conduct the entire research, I will require a period of one month within which I will have done my research, compiled the data and made conclusions. In addition, I will need about $ 14000, which I will utilize as follows.

Preparation and printing of questionnaires -$5000

Transport expenses -$4000

Miscellaneous expenses -$5000

At the end of the research, I hope to have determined whether a shift from wired to a wireless connection is necessary or not. In addition, I wish to have analyzed the advantages of wireless connection over wired connection.

Qualification and Experience

The knowledge that I acquired in college from my minor, which was research methods, will be of great use in this project. Further, I will apply the skills and experience gained in the fieldwork during college days. In addition, I will use the experience I have gained in the working life especially to conduct interviews and gather relevant information to complete my research paper.

Conclusion

Our organization needs to move at the same rate of development with the world. Therefore, I would request the management to give me permission to conduct this research. In addition, I would ask them to accord me the necessary support to carry out this research in terms of time and resources. If given a chance, the wireless connection can be of much benefit to the organization as a whole. First, it would allow employees flexibility in their job. Secondly, it would save money and hence increase profit margins since it is much cheaper to install and maintain as compared to the wired connection. Thirdly, the wireless network is economical since it can accommodate a large number of employees at the same time.
