From its inception in 1905, the ATS has evolved into the world’s foremost medical society dedicated to furthering scientific understanding of breathing problems and pulmonary diseases. ATS currently has 15,000 members worldwide, implying that its influence can be felt practically anywhere (Wilson & Corn, 2017).

The organization’s aim is to improve respiratory health by making strategic investments in research, education, and training (Wilson & Corn, 2017). Together with the vision, the objective is to fund research, education, and training with the goal of preventing, treating, and curing respiratory disorders around the world (Wilson & Corn, 2017). One project by ATS is the project about palliative management of dyspnea crisis conducted in 2009 (Weiss et al., 2016). The project focused on the identification, management, and best resource utilization for effective reduction of acute incidents of dyspnea. The research was conducted on the participants at a 2009 ATS workshop. At the conclusion of the research, ATS came up with a committee that developed a report on the best ways to deal with the pain caused by dyspnea (Weiss et al., 2016). The recommendations included best ways of caring for the patients, development of patient education, and care coordination (Weiss et al., 2016). These proposals have improved the means of dealing with the illness worldwide.

A nursing organization that can partner with ATS to efficiently contribute to global health is the International Council of Nurses.
