List three rules you remember the most from your childhood/adolescence. What was the purpose of each of the rules (why were the rules made or enforced?)
The first childhood rule asserts that one should speak polite. Such rule was made to ensure that children respected their elders. The second rule stated that one should be gentle with each other. The rule was meant to forge friendships amongst the teens and facilitate their interactions with each other. The third rule laid emphasis on not asking things in the supermarkets. Such was to control our appetites and avoid embarrassment to our parents.
List three rules you live by today and the reasons you have them embedded in your life.
The rules that I live by today include, respect to all humanity, being empathetic to the issues that people go through and wearing a seatbelt in the car always. The three rules are embedded in my life owing to the discipline that they bring about besides making me a better citizen.
Explain how rules impact the nursing profession. Provide examples from practice.
Rules impact the nursing profession as they ensure that the work of a nurse is diligent and does not cause harm to a patient. For example, the rule of the nurse offering prescribed drugs to a patient as ordered by the physicians reduces the incidences of medical error.
Compare and Contrast the Hippocratic Oath and the Nightingale Pledge…..what are the similarities and differences? What are you surprised to see since they originated a long time ago?
The major similarity between the Hippocratic Oath and the Nightingale Pledge is the commitment that the nurses make to take care of the health of their patients and using their knowledge and abilities in treating their patients. The two also affirm the commitment of a nurse not to harm a patient. However, the difference between the two is, the Hippocratic Oath is mainly meant to the physicians and affirms the utilization of knowledge and abilities in the treatment of a patient. However, the Nightingale Pledge was meant to entrench the ethical standards that the nurses ought to follow.
Identify the part(s) of the Nightingale Pledge that are still relevant today. Explain the relevance to your practice setting. Describe at least one thing that you would add to the Nightingale Pledge.
The part of the Nightingale Pledge that is still relevant today is that of issuing a commitment to elevate the standards of the nursing practice. Such is relevant since the nursing practice needs to entrench the evidence based practices when attending to patients. However, one thing that ought to be added to the pledge is the need of the nurses to be critical thinkers and working as team members with physicians in their practice.
