Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Goals

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is also known as responsible business or corporate citizenship. CSR has been established as a policy that serves as a company watchdog. It ensures that the law, international conventions, and ethical standards are actively followed. Some organizations, however, do not limit their CSR implementation to its standards. They go so far as to carry out other behaviors that appear to be of societal relevance. On the other side, sustainable development is a desired way of life that will ensure that every individual enjoys a desirable lifestyle. On September 25, 2015, governments established goals to support sustainable development. For the goals to be reached tasks have to be completed by different bodies. For example the society, private sector, the government and even individuals like you. Corporate social responsibility and sustainable development goals are two different disciplines whose agenda correspond and relates very well. For sustainable development goals to be reached CRS has to be implemented and practiced wildly. This study seeks to elaborate on how corporate social responsibility can participate in achieving the sustainable development goals.

Can corporate social responsibility play a constructive role in achieving the sustainable development goals?

The answer to this question is yes following the facts discussed below. One of the sustainable development goals is poverty reduction. Poverty especially in the third world countries has been a major challenge affecting even the developed countries. The reason for this is that some countries with potential to make great business allies are hindered by their poor background. Therefore they lack resources to make them economically competitive. Through the implementation of the CSR, the gap between the rich among the poor and the rich will be greatly reduced. Through CSR the population of the poor people has reduced by half since 1990. This was a great achievement. The role of the CSR was to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor individuals and countries. The establishments of business ties among them fought poverty really well. Also the rich countries invested in the poor countries creating jobs to the poor. Corporate social responsibility play a vital role in reaching the sustainable development goals especially in Africa by providing resources for innovations and developments. A good example is the equity bank in Kenya. The bank is making huge donations through its MasterCard foundation to provide scholarships to the poor but bright students in the country. This will ensure that the students get quality education which will foster success and poverty reduction.

Another goal is to end hunger and achieve food security globally.

The CSR is committed to achieving this goal through a number of ways. First is to increase the production of food items, this might be done through the establishment of modern forms of farming. That is new agricultural methods to ensure high food production even during the off season. This will ensure sufficient food and even surplus to ensure food security. There is also relief food that United Nations provide to cope with the more affected regions. Many countries are a benefit of this relief food that are of high nutrition content to fight malnutrition. Such food content are heavily subsidized by the government or given for free to tackle the very poor. The will of businesses to accept low margins of profit to provide food to the poor is evidence that the CSR is applicable. The CSR has also formulated another model which requires consumer food products to be availed to the medium ranked group at affordable prices.

Another sustainable development goal is to ensure healthy lives by promoting the wellbeing of all at all ages.

This simply means providing affordable healthcare to everyone regardless of their social status. The CSR in this regard allows the organizations of health and even private sectors come together to tackle issues of health together. For example campaigns against cancer, tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS have been very common. They have even put aside a day to sensitize the world on this diseases. During this periods they run free tests and even give free counseling. Children are given vaccines to prevent infections such as polio and yellow fever. Companies give donations to fund projects for example purchasing of ARVs to counter and regulate the mortality rate of HIV. By doing this it is evident that corporate social responsibilities play a constructive role in reaching the sustainable development goals.

Education is the key to success.

For any individual, group or country to develop, education must be paramount. Education determines the career and abilities of every individual and therefore determines whether a country is likely to move forward or not. CSR in this case comes in to rescue those who cannot afford quality education. Scholarships to Canada and china for example are very common to students from third world countries. This scholarship provide equal opportunities to all a good example is the green card for United States of America. Countries have also come up with exchange programs where by they exchange students and their courses outline. Canadian students will go to Kenya while Kenyan students go to Canada and learn from there. This programs are meant to provide equitable and quality education for all.

Gender equality has been a great concern especially in the 1990’s.

Men were viewed as the leaders of the society and had authority over women. Corporate social responsibility seeks to implement projects that do not discriminate in terms of gender. Men, women, boys and girls are given a chance to fulfill their duties as equal members of the society. CSR has come up with a gender-responsive program which defines the roles and responsibilities of men and women. The program seeks to create awareness among members of the society and to an extent recognize the barriers derived from cultural and societal influences. This influences are the causes of inequalities and CSR address this issue implicating to people that they should respect each other to uphold dignity as human beings. Gender equality leads to happy families, homes, societies, countries and the whole globe.

Among the goals is water and sanitation.

Water is termed as life, this is because without water life ceases to exist. Water and sanitation is therefore a requirement for all. It does not discriminate among the class in the society and hence it’s a goal that will ensure sustainable development if reached. Corporate social responsibility has put a lot of its resources to ensure that every individual has access to water. A company that provides clean and safe water for its employees to drink can be termed as being responsible. A company may further show its social responsibility by maintaining high levels of hygiene, this can be through improved waste management and sewage treatment plants. Companies would also benefit from such projects. People like to work in clean environments as it is less prone to infections therefore a lot of people would like to be associated with the company. A clean working environment ensures a healthy working team and therefore high production.

As water and sanitization are of great importance so is clean and affordable modern energy.

Modern energy is one of the sustainable goals and from the point of view energy controls all the activities necessary for development to be achieved. Companies producing energy should be socially responsible in the way they do it. This production causes a lot of emissions that are harmful to the environment, as a matter of fact they produce the highest amount of greenhouse gases. When a corporate is socially responsible it will make sure that they reduce or meet the set standards of emissions level. CSR prevents environmental pollution. In addition to this, CSR provides for alternative ways of handling production. As much as it prevents pollution, it also ensures high production and profits, for example companies installing power monitoring meters are reserving a lot of energy therefore increasing their profits. CSR also provides for alternatives to ensure that energy is produced which environmentally friendly for example wind energy, hydroelectricity and solar energy. Implementation of CSR in these corporates will ensure the goal of sustainable development is reached.

Promotion of sustainable economic growth and employment.

A good number of organizations believe that when pursuing the company’s target, it’s advisable to include CSR. This is because consumers are assumed to like companies doing charity work and would therefore spend more on such organizations. In return CSR will have boosted economic growth. In implementing all the required actions to facilitate social responsibility, a lot of jobs will be created there giving job opportunities to the growing population. CRS will ensure good working conditions therefore promoting sustainable employment and decent work for all. Corporate social responsibility would impact the goal of building quality and resilient infrastructure, industrialization and promote innovation. How does it play this role? CRS has brought countries together and also different companies in the construction of major buildings and infrastructure. This is meant to avoid small mistakes and also assure high quality through analysis from all teams.

Conclusion

From the above presented case it is crystal clear that that corporate social responsibility can and plays a constructive role in reaching the sustainable development goals. Without CSR these goals would be nothing but dreams but with CSR it is a reality. Social responsibility comprises of human responsibility, environmental responsibility and product responsibility. The goals of sustainable development revolve around the three main areas of CSR. Human responsibility includes the suppliers, consumers and employees of the corporate. Providing quality services and good working conditions. Product responsibility ensures that all the end products are of good quality and harmless to human beings. Example are hotel products or even mechanical products. Environmental responsibility on the hand ensure that the environment is protected from pollution during the production process. This responsibility is very sensitive as it looks forward to achieving quick action to handle the climatic change.
