Analysis of Soylent Green

The movie Soylent Green

The movie Soylent Green, which was released over 40 years ago, with concerns on corporations and humanity that are applicable today more than they were in those days although with some additional perspectives. The movie addresses the issue of global warming; throughout the film, various corporations are claiming that it is majorly attributed to human activities.

Corruption in the government

Another aspect the movie focuses on is the deeply-rooted corruption in the government. The officials are directly sponsoring the manufacture of Soylent, which however, allegedly contains chemicals and plankton. Furthermore, the government neglects the number of murders, supplying water to the rich only, which shows that humanity is the least of their concerns. Any attempts to go against the government can lead to death, which can be observed on the example of Joseph Cotton, who was a straightforward member of the Soylent corporation’s board of directors.

Discrimination against women

In addition, the film portrays acts against humanity in handling women. Women are represented as victims of discrimination, which can be still observed in some societies in the present world, although most nations have achieved significant progress. The two main female characters in the film, whose peculiar feature is their status in regards to men they associate with, serve as an example of such phenomenon. The film clearly portrays men as having much stronger characters than women. Similarly to the environment, females are degradable and replaceable, and therefore, in the current world, environmental degradation can have a detrimental effect on women unless the necessary measures are taken.
