including Thailand (my birth country), Japan, Norway, the United States, and Canada, where I currently reside. During my time in these areas, I was exposed to and taught about diverse cultures in a variety of ways. Though they are vastly different from my Thai culture, I must admit that I have enjoyed the experience. My passion is to travel the world. I’m the kind of person who can live everywhere and eat something, eating new things and learning new cultures. Throughout my life, I have participated in several volunteer events. I have volunteered as a summer camp counselor, taken food and clothes to the impoverished rural area on the high mountain in Thailand, assisted in the Edmonton community during FortMcMurry forest fire whereby I helped with gathering and arranging food and clothes for donation. My passion is helping others, and this makes me happy. I do not find helping others surprising considering that I am a nurse and assisting others is part of my job.
Thai tradition in my mother country plays a significant role on a day to day basis and is mostly influenced by religion. We are taught good manners from a tender age and maintain this throughout our life. It is important to show respect to our elderly and those in higher social positions such as our parents and teachers while monks are almost revered despite their age. Losing self-control and having a confrontational attitude is a shame in my culture. Generally speaking, we view with negativity the act of displaying emotion in public. We, therefore, strive to uphold a positive and friendly attitude, a smile and a sense of humor despite how much upset or frustrated we feel. There are some habits that we consider rude such as touching someone on the head because the head is considered sanctified and not to be touched by people besides parents or people with whom we have close relationships. Another habit that we disregard is using one’s feet to point at people or things because they are considered dirty. Shoes are left outdoors at all times. We are also very careful about our dress code and appearance and poorly groomed people are viewed with negativity. In my culture, mealtimes are a time to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends. We are very generous with our food and even invite strangers to dine with us as we consider it a sociable activity.
