Scholars have come to the conclusion that the architectural style of a particular location does, in fact, influence the discipline of persons using the facility after extensive research and countless studies. For this reason, among many other behaviors that the society wants to eradicate or promote for a better and improved society, there has been a resurgence in interest in criminal behavior patterns. Other disciplines, including geography, law, sociology, and even urban planning, have been impacted by this research. Therefore, the key is to have a better awareness of the specific architectural design factors that affect people, understand how they affect those people, and be able to take this into account when creating the final design. Once an architect knows this, they can be able to tailor make their designs into whatever way they want things to play out depending on the needs or required output of behavior.
During the design process, four broad categories for consideration each being independent in nature and vast in the areas of influence it has on the discipline of people. These four main categories are; behavioral facilitation, physiological maintenance, perceptual maintenance and social facilitation. Despite all these four being independent and wide and very distinct from one another, they all have to be combined and incorporated in a finely tuned way to have the desired effect and discipline among the people the structure is meant for.
For this particular case, the specific project involves building individual cabins, famously referred to as Delter Shelters in the woods for tourists to stay in, and this includes both winter and summer cabins. The next project will be undertaken in Washington. The greatest challenge which also poses a great opportunity for me as an architect is that these cabins need to be set up in very remote locations. Tourists prefer it this way, and they actually enjoy the remoteness to enjoy their time and privacy away from work and other stresses of life they face in their day to day activities. For this reason, it is critical to get the design right and just create the perfect atmosphere for maximum enjoyment and relaxation. In this regard, I will take a step by step approach to elaborate how the various design objectives are achieved and how the various architectural effects on people’s discipline are applied in each case.
Behavioral Facilitation
In this case there are two aspects involved. The first would be functional conformance and the other spatial conformance. Each of these plays an important part of ensuring that a certain kind of behavior while within the premises is encouraged. Considering that the aim of the architectural designing is to increase the number of guests and have more and more tourist coming to the facility, there would need to have this in place in every possible way.
Regarding functional Conformance, considering that this refers to having all possible requirement within the environment to make all functions of that place achievable, I would say that this has been well catered for. For a start, the tourists coming here are in need of a good vacation and much-needed rest. For this reason, there are beds together with all the warm beddings appropriate in a cold environment during winter. To top it up, the beds come in different designs depending on the tastes of the individual. The beds are uniquely designed with inspiration from the animal kingdom. For instance, men would prefer aggressive kind of animals such as the lion or the cheetah. Thus the legs of these beds have in them carved out faces of these animals and all other accessories too designed to go along with this theme. For instance bathroom mirrors, all having an outline of a lion’s face among others.
For Spatial Conformance on the other hand, which is essentially the organization of the structure and appropriate spacing, things are also catered for this. Considering that most people are couples, the room is spacious enough with enough space to walk around for two people without bumping into each other. The bathroom and toilets are separated, and even a person in a wheelchair can go in and do what they need to do with minimal difficulty because of the provisions of space. In particular, the suites are bigger, and all rooms are located close to each other such as the kitchen, to make it easy to move from one room to another or even talk to a person in another room without shouting.
Physiological Maintenance
Climate Conformance for this project is of particular increased interest considering the location of the cabins. Particularly for winter, all provisions must be made to ensure that the occupants of the cabins are not affected by the severe weather outside. To achieve this, there are steel shutters that can be opened by a hand-cranked mechanism. The thermostats also help regulate the temperatures inside, and one can set it to their liking. Particularly, there is the utilization of double walls to totally isolate the inside and the outside and ensure that no heat is lost through the walls. The cabins are raised from the ground and supported in stilts to avoid a scenario where the entre cabin is covered in snow, and there are no means of entering or leaving without shoveling the snow. This is of particularly important considering that the cabins are separated by a considerable distance from each other, and thus it may not be easy to get help as fast as one needs it.
Hazard regulations are also well incorporated. Considering that the cabins are raised above ground, it may not be possible to access the rooms unless by means of stairs. The stairs are designed in such a way as to be gently sloping and to be nonskid to avoid falls and any related injuries from this danger. Each room is fitted with a smoke detector in case there is a fire.
Perceptual Maintenance
As part of the endeavor to be a destination of choice as specified by the client, sensory initiation had to be considered in the design. There is particular emphasis on certain cabins that were tailor-made to be lovers’ nests and encourage romance especially for couples that go there for their honeymoon. Such rooms are fitted with different light spectrums that create an aura of romance, and these can be brightened or dimmed depending on the mood the people want to create. Additionally, the floors in these rooms are made to change color and also temperature as set by those in the room.
Sensory Conformance is also well adhered to in this project. Just to mention that, the wall hangings and the positioning of the windows were carefully selected to bring in light at certain angles during certain times. For instance, in one cabin, the window overlooks a body mass that when one looks at their filled with nostalgia and creates in them certain senses that make them feel at home and with deep thought and longing.
Social Facilitation
One of the reasons why most people want to go for vacation is to get away from everything and have some alone time with their partners. This is where Social Initiation comes in. it should enable an individual have that paradise of their own even when they are not in their own place. For this reason, all the cabins are unique, and none is similar to another, so as to give a choice of variety to the many people who long for a place they can call their own for a few days or weeks. For example, one room has the theme of music as its basis, this way a musician can very easily identify with it. It even has provisions such as a piano and a few different guitars.
Social Isolation is highly emphasized in these cabins. The privacy most people long for and want to have is considered and made by ensuring that one can even sleep with their blinds open and have no fear because the cabins are located high up in the air such that no one can see what is going on in any room without using a tall ladder. With all these things in place, the place becomes a haven for most people and allows them to relax fully.
