In Scott’s circumstance, a number of different assessments could be made. Formative, summative, diagnostic, synoptic, and ipsative assessments are the four types of evaluations (University of Exeter).

By relying on his comments, this assessment helps identify the student’s learning needs in the classroom.

In the case of Scott, it would entail watching his feedback when given instructions so that the various questions and clarifications that he seeks can be worked upon in order to find a means of making him comfortable and able to learn more effectively given his condition of ADHD.

Summative Assessment

This assessment helps the tutor determine the students understanding of the instruction after a specific point in instruction.

Scott is a special case student who requires close monitoring and tis type of assessment would help his teachers keep track of him during his learning without leaving him far behind. This is an assessment that is critical in evaluating the student’s prior knowledge to the topic. It is similar to formative assessment but with a backward looking perspective. It seeks to establish the understanding the student, in this case Scott, has regarding the subject at hand. It is important when a problem arises or when determining how far deep to teach certain content. When the student shows deep prior knowledge, some aspects of the teaching module can be perused over while an in-depth teaching method would help in a case where there is poor prior knowledge.

Synoptic Assessment

This type of assessment requires that the student uses information from various program in order to tackle a topic or case scenario. It is meant to determine the efficiency of the student in coordinating learned concepts between various disciplines. This assessment would show how well Scott can integrate concepts form various fields thus demonstrating his breadth of knowledge and ultimately competency in his class work. This type of assessment can be a part of the other mentioned types of assessment.

Ipsative Assessment

Last but not least, is the Ipsative assessment in which the student’s progress is measured against his previous scores. For example in the case of Scott, his understanding and progress would be measured against his previous scores on the subjects or assessments. In essence, he would be striving to outdo himself. The purpose of this assessment is to enhance motivation learning in the student and ensure that he is improving on an individual level as opposed to simply moving in a crowd.
