Without research, the field of criminal justice cannot be productive because it helps legislators create more successful policies and supports the activities of law enforcement. Without the thorough research that supports criminal justice, actions, money, attention, and other resources would be wasted on objectives that fail to have an impact, eventually putting the souls of countless people in danger. Research has a wide range of applications in the subject of criminal justice; generally, it improves the perception of the professionals working there, enabling them to come up with more effective solutions. The research offers a substantial structure or a point of reference on which there can be the development of the criminal justice solutions. That is to say, the collection of data and information on crime and providing them milieu aids the police units in the implementation of more competent practices. Also, the research in the criminal justice is vital to collecting interest in a reason from the factions that are both within and out of the field. The community organizations, strategy-making groups in the criminal justice, and non-profit making institutions, among other associations, can share the disseminated reports based on the misdemeanor study (The University of Cincinnati, 2017).
The quantitative and qualitative studies have differences right from their definitions; data is quantitative if its presentation is in numerical form and is qualitative if it does not involve the arithmetical but is empirical. Conceptually, the primary concern of the quantitative investigation is to discover the information regarding the societal occurrences while the apprehension of the qualitative exploration is to comprehend the human behavior from the viewpoint of the informant. Moreover, the quantitative research presumes a predetermined and quantifiable reality whereas the qualitative one presupposes the dynamic and discussed certainty. Methodologically, the collection of the qualitative data is through the interview and observation of the participants, while in quantitative, the compilation of the information is through measurement. Also, the analysis of the qualitative data is by ideas from the informants’ descriptions, and in quantitative research, the scrutiny of the facts is by scientific evaluations and statistical assumptions (McLeod, 2017).
Apart from the classification of the research as either quantitative or qualitative based on the kind of data or method of sampling, another grouping of the study is pure or applied depending on the goal of the investigation. The pure research is one conducted exclusively of any particular objective in mind; the principal rationale of the pure research is to progress understanding and to discover and clarify the association between the variables. Likewise, the driving force of the pure research is inquisitiveness, instinct, and interest, and is more tentative. Conversely, the motive of the applied research is to offer a solution to a specific and realistic predicament. For that reason, the applied research tends to be characteristically descriptive. Furthermore, since the applied examination involves solving the practical dilemmas, it frequently has the practical techniques (Hasan, 2017).
The ethics in the criminal justice research is of importance as it keeps the individuals carrying out the investigations honest for signing the written approval makes them abide by the code of ethics. The ethics in research make it possible to come up with accurate data as the investigators cannot give out the false information as that can result in their suspension or expulsion from further explorations. Also, the ethics of the criminal justice research is vital as it binds the professionals to uncover the secretive information that is not in the light (Williams, n.d).
