Title: The Value of Cultural Diversity
The purpose of the activity: To engage the citizens and sensitize them on the importance of cultural diversity.
Learning Objectives:
To define the term cultural diversity as inclusive as possible, enable people conceptualize various aspects of cultural diversity as well as learn to accommodate the other people’s cultures and finally enable the citizens to understand the role that culture plays in an individual’s life and the relevance of accepting, tolerating other people’s culture.
Culture significantly plays the role of shaping the character of a person and the personality that an individual acquires. Through certain cultural backgrounds and distinct cultural norms and beliefs, an individual develops self-identity. Cultural diversity therefore according to Ugbo in his article review, refers to the existence of people with different cultural practices as observed in beliefs, religion, language, the nationality, different geographic regions and perception of life situations.
Based on the conception of culture as referred to in the above paragraph, an interview based on the importance of cultural diversity will be conducted. The interview would an opportunity to interact with sample people of the different cultures within the ten-mile radius of the community constituents aforementioned to find out their knowledge in relation to the role of diversity in culture. Due to the objectives proposed in the learning outcome, the civic engagement will incorporate interactive interview questions including the following.
What particular languages does the interviewee speak? This particular question would seek to inquire on the interview respondent how much they are conversant with their language as well as if all informed of how their language came to be.
What particular religion the interview respondent believes in? This question, unlike the first question, would seek to find what role the culture playing shaping up the religious doctrines. Different culture practice and believe in varied religious practices while some unite under certain circumstances. Hence, how hard or easy do the respondents find accommodating or accepting others religious practices.
In view of the fact that children in learning institutions should be helped wit learning secondary languages, what is their perception and conception of such ideologies? Proposing such an opinion would intend to reveal the particular reactions that are to be expected when such notions are implemented in schools. The findings of the civic engagement would find relevance to not only the interview respondents but also to the education systems. Recommendations as to whether second languages would then be drawn with emphasis on the interviewee’s first-hand responses.
Finally, the respondents would be allowed to respond to whether it would be effective to accommodate and respect other people’s varied cultures if they stood chances of minimizing and eventually eradicating social insecurities, learning to coexist peacefully in a society and not viewing other people’s cultures as threats to their personal identities.
